Our annual meeting in January saw two members elected for the first time to the club's board of directors: Ellen Nielsen and Michael Sarback.
Ellen Nielsen joined SCCC in 2019. She also plays croquet at the Highlands Country Club in Highlands, NC, and at The Oaks in Osprey, FL, where she and her husband have their winter home.
A native of Texas, Ellen graduated from UT Austin with a degree in fine arts and did graduate work in art history and archaeology. She met her husband, Dr. Erik Nielsen, on an archaeological dig in Italy!
Ellen had a long career in graphic arts working as an illustrator, graphic designer, ad agency art director and creative director—while living in Texas, Indiana, and Switzerland. The Nielsens returned to the USA full-time in 2017 and now split their time between Osprey and Highlands.
Michael Sarback grew up in a US Air Force family in Sacramento, CA, where he attended college. When his family was relocated to France for a time during his childhood, he was first exposed to great architecture. That eventually led to a 35-year career in architecture and project management.
Michael's design portfolio includes commercial office buildings, industrial projects, health care facilities, education buildings, justice buildings, and numerous other city-county-state projects. The impressive list now includes one croquet club, as Michael has taken the lead in designing the long-range plan of SCCC facilities, which one day (soon, we hope) will include 10 courts and upgraded clubhouse and bathroom facilities, as well as court-side shade structures.
Michael and partner Susie Helton have also taken a lead in advancing golf croquet at SCCC by instituting the very popular Saturday morning play.
Ellen Nielsen and Michael Sarback join president John Goldener, Jackie Jones, Hans Peterson, Webster Bull, Mark Claff, Jim Coling, and Bob Gelineau to constitute a nine-member board of directors. The board typically meets once a month; meeting times are posted on the event calendar on our web site; and all members are welcome to attend (while asked to keep comments/questions short and concise).
At the annual meeting in January we thanked outgoing board members Russ Cuccia, Nancy Hart, and Sue Williams for their years of service to the club.
